Become an intern

Maybe you are working towards a master’s, bachelor’s, or engineering degree. Perhaps you are attending a grande école. If you are a student of any type, then you can apply for an internship at INRAE. Below, find out more about the application process.

Status

During your internship, you retain your status as a student at your educational institution of origin, which serves as the signatory for your internship agreement.

It is possible to do an Erasmus internship at INRAE if you are enrolled at a French or foreign institution that has been awarded an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education. The internship must be related to your degree programme.

Duration

At INRAE, internship length cannot exceed 924 hours (or 6 months of full-time work) per teaching year. The internship must take place as part of your degree programme and can be continuous or broken up over several time periods.

Compensation

For internships lasting 2 months or less, you might receive a stipend from your host research unit. For internships lasting more than 2 months, INRAE is required to pay you a stipend, whose amount is adjusted annually. For example, in 2025, interns were given a monthly net stipend of ~€620.

Stipends are paid at the end of the month. As an intern, you do not receive paid sick leave.

This stipend can be complemented by certain other grants, notably need-based grants, Erasmus grants, and grants awarded by a foreign government, the French national government, or a French regional government.

Application process

If you wish to do an internship at INRAE, you must reach out to a research unit of interest, either by emailing its director or a target researcher. To learn more about the work being conducted by INRAE’s laboratories and scientists, check out the section “KEY INFORMATION”.
